Qualified Health Information Network
A QHIN is a network designated under TEFCA to exchange health data nationwide with other QHINs on behalf of its participants.
A QHIN (Qualified Health Information Network) is an entity designated under TEFCA to serve as a hub for nationwide exchange. QHINs connect to each other and route queries and data on behalf of the hospitals, clinics, payers, and vendors that participate in their network.
The number of designated QHINs grows on a rolling basis; designees to date include organizations such as CommonWell, eHealth Exchange, Epic Nexus, Health Gorilla, Kno2, KONZA, MedAllies, Netsmart, Oracle Health Information Network, eClinicalWorks, and Surescripts. Together they connect tens of thousands of participating sites.
QHINs are simultaneously channel partners and prospects for interoperability tooling: they can embed translation to onboard participants faster, and they themselves need robust v2 ↔ FHIR handling at the boundaries where diverse partners connect.
