NCPDP SCRIPT Standard
NCPDP SCRIPT is the national standard for electronic prescribing transactions between prescribers and pharmacies.
NCPDP SCRIPT is the standard that carries electronic prescribing between prescriber systems and pharmacies. It defines the transactions that make e-prescribing work: NewRx (a new prescription), RxRenewal, RxChange, CancelRx, RxFill, and medication history requests, among others.
SCRIPT has versioned over time; the v2023011 version aligns with newer HTI regulatory requirements, while many systems still exchange earlier releases such as 10.6. Controlled-substance prescribing (EPCS) layers DEA identity and two-factor requirements on top of SCRIPT.
Bridging SCRIPT with FHIR MedicationRequest and with EHR-native medication models is a core part of making the pharmacy surface interoperable, especially as benefit and prior-authorization workflows converge on FHIR.
